A Somatic Wellness Program

LEAD ON THE EXHALE

by KGC Pilates

The exhale is where the work happens.

Lead on the Exhale is a somatic wellness program for Black and Latine education leaders grounded in classical Pilates and the science of nervous system regulation. Traditional professional development focuses on technical skills. The adaptive side exists but nothing has ever looked like this. This program addresses the gap that has been costing this profession its best people.

You know what you carry.

The jaw that is clenched before a hard meeting. The shoulders that never fully drop. The shallow breathing that became your baseline somewhere around the first quarter of the school year. The exhaustion that a weekend cannot fix. Your body is not broken. It is responding correctly to one of the hardest jobs. But correct does not mean sustainable.

The Six Principles

Lead on the Exhale is grounded in six classical Pilates principles — Breath, Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, and Flow — each translated directly into an adaptive leadership skill. The science of nervous system regulation underlies every practice. The classical Pilates repertoire delivers it. Traditional PD has always focused on technical skills. The adaptive side exists but nothing has ever looked like this.

Built by a Leader, for Leaders

Lead on the Exhale was built by Kiersten Gibson-Cooper — a school leader with over a decade in the field and the founder of KGC Pilates. She built this program because she felt what sustained school leadership does to the body and could not find a solution built specifically for leaders like her. So she built it herself.

What Is Included

The Science

Most educators know stress is a problem. What they do not know is what it is specifically doing to their decision-making and leadership effectiveness in real time. This session translates current nervous system research into a practical framework built for leaders of color — including why this population carries a measurably higher cognitive and physiological load, and what the body can do about it.

A Guided Classical Pilates Experience

Participants move through the classical Pilates repertoire under expert instruction. Each exercise is explicitly connected to an adaptive leadership competency — breath regulation, control, concentration, precision, and flow. This is a structured somatic intervention that builds the physical and cognitive foundation for sustained high performance. Research shows eight weeks of consistent Pilates practice produces a 53% reduction in anxiety and a 73% improvement in cognitive function.

Community Learning

This is not a solo wellness experience. Participants engage in structured peer reflection and intimate small group conversations throughout the session. Leaders leave having connected with 25 other Black and Latine education leaders who understand what their week actually feels like — and a shared practice to sustain them.
